Hoarder clearance: deciding what leaves and what stays
The door opens onto bags, furniture, papers and accumulated objects whose exact status remains unknown. Some must stay. Others may leave, but a few photographs cannot identify them correctly.
Hoarder clearance therefore begins with sorting on site. The items belonging to the property, personal belongings, identifiable waste and everything requiring a decision from the authorised person must be kept distinct.
- Identify what belongs to the property and must not leave with the accumulated items.
- Set aside documents, keepsakes, keys, payment cards and other personal belongings.
- Remove only the items whose disposal has been confirmed.
- Suspend the decision whenever an item has no confirmed owner or status.
Sorting cannot be decided from outside
What the initial information can show
- Photographs provide only a partial view of visible volumes.
- A verbal description indicates the rooms or areas thought to be cluttered.
- Existing instructions help identify certain belongings that must be preserved.
- Available documents establish who is entitled to make decisions.
What appears after the home is opened
- Personal belongings may be hidden beneath bags or behind furniture.
- A box described as disposable may contain documents that must be kept.
- An appliance may belong to the property despite being among the accumulation.
- Particular products or objects may require a separate waste stream.
Who decides what leaves
- The occupant decides when they still control the home and their belongings.
- The property owner decides what happens to items belonging to the property.
- A relative may direct the sorting only with the necessary authority.
- In an estate or ownership dispute, the items concerned remain outside the removal process.
A national service with local conditions
Défi Clean works in the areas served and presented on the site’s local pages. The same rule applies everywhere: clearance cannot begin properly until it is known what may leave, what must stay and what still requires confirmation.
Access to the home, the use of shared areas, loading arrangements and available disposal routes vary by location. The local pages explain these constraints without changing the responsibility of the person authorising removal.
From opening the home to removing authorised items
Access
The authorised person provides access to the home and passes on the instructions already established.
Initial review
Accessible areas, installed fixtures and the first personal belongings are identified before anything is moved.
Separation
Items to be kept, confirmed or removed follow separate streams so that they are not mixed together.
Confirmation
Uncertain cases are presented to the person entitled to decide. Défi Clean does not settle ownership or inheritance disputes.
Packing
Confirmed items are grouped according to their nature and the precautions required for handling them.
Removal
Only authorised contents leave the property, through routes suited to their nature and the locally available options.
What must be established before clearance
- The identity of the person authorised to give instructions.
- The status of the property and the equipment already present.
- The categories of personal belongings to find and isolate.
- The items expressly designated to remain in place.
- The contents whose removal has been clearly confirmed.
- The boxes, furniture or appliances that still need to be opened.
- Products requiring particular handling or a specific disposal route.
- The procedure to follow when an unexpected item is found.
This preparation establishes sorting rules, not a definitive inventory. Until the home is opened and layers of accumulation are moved, part of its contents remains hidden. Défi Clean carries out an operational review; it does not replace a notarial inventory or a decision between beneficiaries.

Questions about hoarder clearance
Can sorting be decided from photographs?
Photographs show only the surfaces and objects visible when they were taken. They do not reveal the contents of bags, boxes or closed furniture. They can help prepare the initial review, but cannot settle the sorting before the home is opened.
Who can authorise the removal of items?
Permission must come from the person legally entitled to control the home or the belongings concerned. This may be the occupant, the owner or a representative holding suitable authority. Défi Clean does not independently determine ownership of a disputed item.
How are personal belongings handled?
Documents, photographs, keys, jewellery and keepsakes are kept out of the removal stream when found. They are presented or reported in accordance with the instructions received. Their final destination remains a decision for the authorised person.
Is a badly damaged object automatically treated as waste?
No, its condition alone does not establish its status. Damaged furniture may belong to the landlord, while a stained document may retain administrative or personal value. If there is doubt, the item remains isolated until its status is confirmed.
Why can an inventory not be prepared before the home is opened?
Accumulation hides part of the contents and makes some areas inaccessible. Objects may be nested, enclosed or covered by other items. Before opening the home and gradually moving the first layers, any list would remain incomplete.
What happens if an item may belong to a third party?
The item does not automatically enter the removal stream. It is separated until the appropriate person confirms its status. Défi Clean does not resolve ownership disputes or replace any necessary legal process.
Does clearance automatically include cleaning the home?
Clearance and cleaning have separate scopes. The first organises sorting and authorised removal, while the second deals with the surfaces made accessible. The page about cleaning after Diogenes syndrome presents that service separately.
