Uninhabitable Apartment Cleaning in Paris 2nd Arrondissement
A home becomes uninhabitable through a build-up of very concrete facts: waste left where it fell, water cut off or leaking, a kitchen out of service, a bathroom nobody can use, floors and walls loaded with grime. That is the condition we deal with, room by room, until the result can be checked.
In Paris 2e, Défi Clean takes back apartments, single rooms and commercial units that their condition has made unusable. This is hygiene work rather than housekeeping: we strip out, scrub back, rinse and check. No product makes up for a surface that was not cleaned first.
- Removal of waste and spoiled food
- Kitchen, fridge, worktops and extractor hood
- Bathroom, shower and exposed pipework
- Ingrained floors, skirting boards, walls and joinery
The three places a home goes wrong first
The kitchen
- Food past its date, packaging, spilled liquids
- Baked-on grease on the hood, the wall and the worktop
- A fridge to empty, defrost and then treat
- Blocked sink and trap, skirting boards soaked through
The bathroom
- Pan, shower tray and grout scaled or soiled
- Marks on the tiling and behind the fittings
- Slow drains and smells coming back up the traps
- Floor and the base of the walls to be redone completely
The living rooms
- Bedding, rugs and textiles beyond saving, to be taken out
- Floorboards and vinyl marked deep into the surface
- Walls, switches, handles and joinery loaded with grime
- Windows and air vents blocked up
Why buildings in the 2nd hold on to dirt
The buildings of the 2nd arrondissement are old and usually cut into many small spaces. Wooden floors, plaster partitions, mouldings, built-in cupboards, exposed pipework: all of them porous or hollow, and all of them places where grime settles for good. Apartments facing a courtyard or a light well get very little daylight and ventilate badly, which makes damp worse and fixes smells in place. Top-floor rooms, left over from the old servants’ quarters, usually combine a small floor area, a single water point and the bare minimum of ventilation.
The 2nd also mixes housing, offices and wholesale trade inside the same buildings. Storerooms in the Sentier, back rooms in the Mail, cellars at the far end of a courtyard: these closed-up spaces, unvisited for a long time, need exactly the same treatment as a home, with one extra difficulty on top — getting in and out. Carrying heavy waste up a narrow staircase, or up from a cellar, means packing it properly and preparing the drop-off point in advance.
The order in which the property is taken back
Assessment of condition
Room by room: what the waste consists of, which surfaces are affected, whether water and electricity work, and whether there are pests.
Removal
Waste, food and furniture beyond saving go out first. This is the stage that cuts the smell most sharply.
First heavy pass
A heavy first pass over the floors, the kitchen and the bathroom to take off the thickness before any finishing work begins.
Deep cleaning
Surfaces stripped back, grout, traps and the base of the walls redone, and several passes wherever the surface has absorbed.
Check and possible follow-up
The result is checked with you. Disinfection or decontamination is only proposed at this stage, if what has been uncovered warrants it.
What sets one job apart from another
Two apartments of the same size can call for very different resources. The quote is built on physical observations, never on a general impression of how bad things look.
- The volume of waste to be removed and what it consists of
- The number of rooms genuinely affected
- How thick the grime is on the floors and in the kitchen
- The state of the bathroom and whether the drains run
- How much of the surface is porous and absorbs rather than rinses
- The presence of pests, which has to be coordinated beforehand
- The floor level, the staircase and the distance to the vehicle
One question comes up again and again: the furniture. A mattress, a sofa or a fitted carpet that has soaked everything up cannot usefully be cleaned; taking it out is proposed where its condition no longer allows a useful clean. That choice is always put to you before it is acted on.

Frequently asked questions — uninhabitable apartments in Paris 2e
Can cleaning alone make an uninhabitable apartment liveable again?
Cleaning improves the state of hygiene and is often enough where the damage is a matter of dirt rather than structure. On its own it cannot guarantee that a home is habitable, which also depends on the condition of the building. Cleaning removes the waste, the grime and the surfaces that are beyond saving. A leak, failed ventilation or a defect in the building itself, on the other hand, calls for building work, which is not what we do.
Does the smell really go away?
Removing the source reduces it sharply in most cases. As long as waste, a soaked textile or a blocked trap is still in place, no air treatment will hold. So we deal with the cause first, then the surface, and ventilation is restored as soon as it can be.
Does everything have to be disinfected?
No. Disinfection works on surfaces that have already been cleaned, and only where the condition found justifies it. Applied to a caked surface it has no real effect at all. Decontamination answers a narrower set of situations again.
What happens if there are pests?
It is flagged as soon as we assess the property. Depending on the case, treatment is coordinated with the managing agent or the owner either before or after our visit, so that we do not clean a home that would simply be reinfested.
Do you work for landlords or managing agents in the 2nd?
Yes. An apartment handed back in a state that rules out re-letting, complaints raised by the block, a unit or storeroom left abandoned: these are common requests in this arrondissement. A written record of the work can be provided.
What is the quote based on?
On an assessment, made on site or from photographs: floor area, rooms affected, volume of waste, state of the kitchen and bathroom, access to the building. Nothing is priced remotely from a description of a condition alone.
An apartment in the 2nd to bring back to a hygienic state?
Describe what you can see, room by room. We assess the volume to be removed, the surfaces to be taken back and the treatments genuinely required.
